Baby carrier safety guide: Avoid wearing errors that affect breathing and neck health
As parents, we all want to be able to carry our babies safely and effortlessly when out and about. However, many new parents often misuse baby carriers , which can pose potential risks to their babies, particularly breathing and neck safety. Today, I’ll share a detailed baby carrier safety guide, combining advice from pediatric experts and my own experience, to help parents use baby carriers wisely .
1. Common risks of wearing a baby carrier incorrectly
Incorrect wearing methods may cause the following problems for your baby:
Restricted breathing : Your baby’s chin is tucked to their chest or their head is tilted forward too much, which can block their airway.
Insufficient neck support : The neck muscles of newborns and young babies are not fully developed. If the baby carrier lacks neck support, it can easily cause pressure on the cervical spine.
Slipping or tilting : If the straps are not properly tight or the buckles are not securely fastened, the baby may slide forward or sideways, increasing the risk of accidents.

To be honest, these risks are much more common than I thought, so it’s really important to know how to put them on correctly.
2. How to wear a baby carrier scientifically
According to the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the European Infant Health Association, the following points should be noted when wearing a baby carrier correctly :
Maintain the TICKS principle
Tight : The carrier should fit snugly against your baby’s body, but not constricting.
In view at all times : The baby’s face should be facing outward or toward the parent, ensuring that the baby can be seen breathing at all times.
Close enough to kiss : The baby’s head should be within the reach of the parent’s chin.
Keep chin off the chest : Avoid pressing your baby’s chin on the chest to keep the airway open.
Supported back : Your baby’s back should be supported by its natural curve, and the neck needs additional support.

Besides these precautions, I always check the buckles are secure and the shoulder and waist straps are snug before going out. I also adjust the length and tightness of the straps to suit my baby so they don’t sway when walking. These seemingly simple steps are actually easily overlooked in daily life.
Summarize
A baby carrier is a great tool for parents to easily care for their baby, but safety always comes first. While it might be a bit nerve-wracking to use it for the first time, mastering the proper donning technique, regularly checking the straps, and choosing a style appropriate for your baby’s age will truly make going out much easier, ensuring your baby’s safety and comfort. Now, I go for a walk every day with my baby on my back, and seeing him nestled safely in my arms gives me such a sense of security.
